Carrels
The University of Georgia Libraries have carrels available for faculty and graduate students. They are available for research and study requiring prolonged consultation of substantial quantities of library materials. Due to the limited number of carrels available and the high demand for them, the length of time carrels may be used is limited. Because the Law Library has "many carrels available for study by students" Law School students should consult with the Law Library about the availability of carrels. Carrel holders are required to share their carrel with at least one other person. It is the responsibility of the carrel holders to work out a schedule to use the carrel.
Certain qualifications must be met in order to obtain one. Carrels are available in the following order of priority:
-
Faculty members engaged in library research
-
Doctoral candidates who have completed course work currently writing dissertation
-
Master's candidates who have completed course work currently writing thesis
Graduate students in some programs may need a carrel before completing their class work .Students applying for a carrel before completing classes should realize that such a choice may prevent them from obtaining a carrel in the future.
Once you have met the above requirements, please use the carrel application form for Main or Science to request a carrel. Carrels are assigned only by appointment. Once the application is completed and signed by your major professor or department head, email Danny T. Bridges (dbridges@uga.edu) at the Main Library or Karen Hunter (khunter@uga.edu) at the Science Library to set up an appointment for carrel assignment.
All students must be enrolled each semester they hold a carrel.
Carrels are assigned for research only; they are not intended for office or conference space.
All library materials kept in the carrel must be checked out to the carrel or the carrel holder.
